Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has cautioned young Nigerians to be mindful of what they post on social media, stressing that reckless expressions could result in expensive legal challenges.....
His warning comes in the wake of reports that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is weighing legal action against activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, over alleged defamatory statements.
In a Facebook post, Sani acknowledged the importance of free expression but reminded Nigerians that slander and defamation often carry serious legal consequences.
Drawing from his personal experience, the ex-lawmaker recalled how he was once dragged before five different Kaduna High Courts by the former state governor during his time in the Senate.
“My advice to young comrades on social media is this: don’t be afraid to air your views, but always have money set aside for lawyers in case you get dragged to court,” he said.
Sani further noted that many activists and rights groups who initially pledge to defend such cases often withdraw when proceedings drag on.
“Some people insult others online because they don’t understand how costly legal battles can be. Lawyers are learned, but they are not cheap. Rights groups will promise to defend you, but once cases linger, they vanish,” he added.
The former senator also urged restraint when posting online, pointing out that while social media platforms encourage open expression, not every thought should be shared publicly.
“Facebook usually asks, ‘What’s on your mind?’ But not everything on your mind should be posted,” he warned.
